Unique, handcrafted turned Sycamore bowl created be me in my workshop tucked away in the rolling hills of Kildare, Ireland. This bowl is one of a kind and its form was influenced by many factors over the months it takes to create from a fresh block of “green” wood to seasoned finished piece.
This bowl measures 163mm wide and 68mm high, and weighs 249 grams.
I really love turned bowls like this one, to me they represent more than a beautiful piece of art but are also truly functional within any home. All of my bowls are made from very special pieces of wood that have come my way from different paths and represent time, full of stories and journeys.
This particular bowl is made from a Sycamore Tree that grew within the grounds of the old Jameson Distillery in Dublin, Ireland. As you can imagine, these trees would have seen a lot over the years and I was very lucky to be in the right place at the right time when some of these magnificent trees had reached the end of their lives and the tree surgeons were doing their necessary work.
Although Sycamore trees live for more than 200 years, we guess that this tree was only over 100 years old. That would mean it was a young sapling around turn of the 20th century, and would have witnessed the start and end of two world wars and it would have been in the thick of the action during the 1916 uprising in Dublin, not to mention all of the other dramatic events that followed. I’m just thankful that I could rescue it and give it a new lease of life.
This bowl would make a wonderful gift for anybody who appreciates the beauty of form, material and meaning. It has been entirely handcrafted, the wood has been treated to several applications of nourishing Danish Oil and has been polished with pure Beeswax and Carnauba wax giving it a tough, safe finish for use within the home.
Caring for your bowl:
This bowl is an entirely natural product and will age gracefully if treated with care. You must never put our wooden bowls in the dishwasher or allow them to soak in water.
If your bowl is displayed as an artistic piece, clean using a dry lint free cloth to remove dust. Your bowl has bee treated to nourishing Danish Oil and polished with both Beeswax and Carnauba wax that will protect it for many years to come but if you feel it necessary you can occasionally polish using either Beeswax and/or Carnauba wax.
If necessary, or if you use your bowl to hold food produce like fruit, you can clean it using a mild detergent and warm water, making sure to rinse and dry immediately and thoroughly.
